To mention Orio is to talk about rowing.
The origins of this sport date back to the XIV and XV centuries when the fourteen man row boat was essential for whaling. During that time, these same fourteen man row boats were probably used for the anchovy, sardine and other fishing seasons. It seems that the origin of the regattas stemmed from the rivalry among fishermen who struggled to arrive first in the port in order to sell their fish.
In Orio, rowing has grown in importance over the past few year. It was a century ago when Orio took the first of the 31 flags which it has won in the regattas of
the Concha of Donostia – San Sebastian. With the creation of the "Orio Olympic Rowing Club" and the incorporation of the sliding seat, Orio has been, and will continue to be, an important presence along with its rowers at the highest levels of the international sports scene, including the Olympics.
