The development that took place in Orio during the XII – XIII centuries brought great changes to the village and was a direct result of being on the coastal road to Santiago. Coming from Donostia, after Mendizorrotz, the pilgrims crossed the river Oria and headed towards Zarautz. The pilgrims had the royal privilege of being exempt from the payment of one maravedi to cross the estuary.
Nowadays, Orio still is a transit village for pilgrims to Santiago. The Saint Martin of Tours chapel, the parish church of Saint Nicholas and the historical centre
