Irun > Santo Domingo de la Calzada
203 km. approx.
8 stages approx.
The Basque or Inland Route was an important entry point to the Way of Saint James across the Iberian Peninsula from Europe and links with the French Route. Starting out from Irun, just like the Coastal or Northern Route, it joins the French Route at the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, in La Rioja, after covering just over 200 km. It is also known as the San Adrián Route, the Inland Route or the Bayonne Route.
Although this route was signposted in 2005, is still not very well known and is rarely used. Cross from Gipuzkoa to Alava via the San Adrián Tunnel, travelling through a natural pass in the Sierra de Aitzgorri, a mountain range that makes up the most extensive natural park in Gipuzkoa.
Although the services on this route are still insufficient, it is anticipated that they will improve in the next few years.
